    GOVENOR'S EMAIL RESPONSE

    Here it is:

    Dear Ms. Vance,

Thank you for contacting me with your thoughts regarding a shift in time zones. I greatly appreciate you taking the time to express your opinion and taking an active part in the public conversation about how to make Indiana a better place.

Joining the rest of America on DST is one small step toward our Administration's goal of putting more Hoosiers to work in better paying jobs. It will end the confusion that has cost Hoosiers untold sales, dollars, and jobs because customers constantly mistake what time it is in Indiana in a given month.

The United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) controls the time zone boundaries in our country and has recently announced their final decisions to counties seeking a time zone switch. The Indiana counties of Daviess, Dubois, Knox, Martin, Perry, Pike, Pulaski and Starke will move from the Eastern to Central time zone beginning April 2, when the nation switches to daylight saving time. Nine other counties that asked the Department to make the change, including Carroll, Cass, Fulton , Lawrence , Marshall , Sullivan, St. Joseph , Vermillion and White, will remain in the Eastern time zone.

I believe it is a very positive step that the USDOT has listened to local requests and held hearings to gain public input. This is a topic on which honest people can differ widely, and it's only fair that each viewpoint be expressed and considered.

It is clear Secretary Mineta listened to the opinions and evidence presented by Hoosiers. Though a perfect outcome is not possible, we have substantial improvement: Indiana is in step with our customers in the global economy, and we have a higher percentage of all Hoosiers on the same time year round than we've ever had. This effort took more time and energy than anyone ever intended, and I share the feelings of those whose patience was tried along the way.

Thank you for your active citizenship.

    Sincerely,

    Mitch Daniels
