    SCHOOL HAS STARTED IN GEORGIA

Yes, school is in session in many parts of Georgia already and the entire state will back by the next week. (Public schools) Atlanta schools started on JULY 22. Yes, this seems Un-American. Think Georgia; think August; think HOT.

My husband put me on to this information this week when he was in Georgia on business. I did not think, "Whoa! Has this man had a stroke?" but it was so hard to believe and I looked it up on the Internet, and yes, they start school in late July to very early August.

Obviously, there is quite a controversy over this and a bill was before the state legislature last year to push back the start day of school, but it failed. One of the reasons given is that the teachers want the kids back in school before the standardized tests are taken in the fall to give them time to get the kids up to speed and raise the schools' performance. The state's educational site is HERE and the quote from the State Superintendent is interesting: "We will lead the nation in improving student achievement." It seems that any statistics based on a policy of making your students study for a month more before the test that most states require would show skewed results.

At any rate, as I type, students in Atlanta are riding to school on air-conditioned busses.

And I thought late August was an early start date.
