GOODBYE NORTH SIDE
In the summer of 1995, I went down to North Side and register my grandson Cameron for first grade. He's a seventh grader now and, two years after he said goodbye to the elementary school where he spent five years of his young life, the community will be saying goodbye to the school forever. It will be demolished in June of this year and will only live on the memories of those who were students there, who taught there, who worked there, who dropped off kids and picked them up, who attended programs there and on and on.
THIS SATURDAY - APRIL 8 - IS A FAREWELL TO NORTH SIDE. The hours are 9 am-2pm.
Officially, the name of the event is NORTH SIDE ELEMENTARY SPRING BAZAAR & FAREWELL TOUR. Informally, it is FAREWELL, OLD FRIEND. The PTO is hosting the last Spring Bazaar and fifth-graders will be leading farewell tours.
Easy As Pie will be offering lunch; the PTO will be selling bricks and memory books: a silent auction is scheduled.
But, the event marks more of a transition than a passing. North Side will continue; only the old building will be torn down. As as for that word "demolished," I'm not so certain it has the correct connotation. The bricks will no longer be mortared together - but in the minds of the people of Kendallville, they will always remain in memory's eye, bonded together, making education available.
