GRANDMA SARAH - in her real good pants

    MONDAY

Yes, isn't that a clever post title? Well, it symbolizes my level of cleverness at the moment, or maybe even overestimates it. We are talking dull here, as in dullard, bozo and without a clue.

Great. What a way to start the week. On top of that, it is supposed to be hot, hot and more hottitidy throughout the week. I have to mow - of course. We want to finish the painting. Kids have to be registered for school - so, okay, that is a high point - and castman needs to go to Fort Wayne to see the doctor.

My coping skills are going to be put to the test . . . maybe I will opt for the blanket over the head response.

    BACKPACK DAY

With school getting closer - oh, glorious day - we looked at backpacks on the internet today. Sydney and I are thinking of getting our own packs and heading on down the road, given all the raucous behavior here - thanks to the totally renegade kids who live in the house.

Here is our comment on the situation: AAAUUUUUUGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH

    WELL, THIS IS INTERESTING

Here's an article about ice falling on a town in Iowa. This might explain unsolved deaths: ice falls out of the sky, conks a guy and then melts. All that's left is a greener part of the lawn . . .

    LAWYERS CIRCLING

Looking for information about the Castleberry recall, I came across several sites that are soliciting clients to sue the company. Maybe we need more sharks in the oceans, lakes, small ponds, puddles . . .

    BUMBLE BEE IS STUNG

Castleberry's is owned by Bumble Bee Seafoods LLC, based in San Diego.
Okay, here's an article from Fox News that ends with the above notation. It is also the ending line in the CNN article. Click on Castleberry to link to their recall information page. My tendency to pun is leading me to a place I should not go . . . must control typing fingers.

It is important to understand that more brand names are included than just Castleberry's, such as Meijer's, Kroger's and Piggly Wiggly.
Excepted from the Castelberry recall page:

WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THE PAGE?

I see the sidebar ends right in the middle of the coke bottle picture, although after this post is published, it may end at a different place . . . just a little thinking out loud there, folks. I have no idea if this is a temporary glitch or not, but if it is not, then I will have to go template diving. That is always interesting.

UPDATE: Okay, now it has shifted, but still ends before the previous posts are listed. I have no idea what the problem is, but am getting my wet suit on in preparation for the dive.

BUT WAIT: I see the page keeps trying to load more, so I guess I will hang tough for a little while.

General Patton YouTube Speech (Modern) in Kendallville

    Really, really like this:

    DAYS GETTING SHORTER

It is 6:03 am and still dark outside; it appears I will be taking Alison to work in the dark, or at least near-dark. It is just going to be getting light later and later from now on until early next summer . . . and it is going to be getting dark earlier and earlier. So I will be either lighting more lamps or cursing a bit more each day.

We didn't leave until 6:20 and it was fairly light out, but overcast. Will we paint today??

    OH RATS

Once again I forgot Mr. Emory Feller's birthday. Every year I am aware of it coming up and then when it gets to the 19th, I enter into a calendar fugue. He was 94 on July 21.

    Monday, July 23, 2007

    HIBERNATOR UPCOMING BIRTHDAY

Yes, on July 26th, Hibernator will celebrate his birthday down in George with his bear buddies. We have heard that the BB - bear buddies - arranged for his present to be brought from the really cold north by ice road truckers and have kept it stored in a special refrigerator. They aren't saying what it is - but advise anyone coming to his party to bring a straw.

    ANOTHER PAINTING DAY . . . I THINK

Yes, we painted today, Cameron, Summer and I. On the back fence - still a lot more to do. Major ack!!

Harry Potter and the whatever . . .

Hibernator is reading the seventh and last book in the Potter series and I could tell him the ending because I read not the book, but the spoilers. Ha. Ha.

    AHA! OHIO LAWYER SHARK BIT

Picture from the Toledo Blade -
Right HERE is the story. Yes, a lawyer from Ohio who was in Hawaii got his leg chomped by a shark.

    Oh my gosh, he's:

Miller- Harvey C.- Jr. Attorney Disability Law Attorneys Toledo OHIO

    So, he'll sue the shark?

    SNAKEY LEAVES A COMMENT

Yes, Summer Vance, aka Snakey, left a comment on yesterday's short post. Summer is my granddaughter and maybe I will have to go to the middle school and tell everyone there about Snakey and her hissy ways. Ha.

Say, scrolling down the page, I see that Sneaky Snakey has left several comments telling me how great my posts are. NOT.

Today seems like Saturday, but it is Friday. Well, I guess that is one way to get a three day weekend.

    THAT RAIN WE DIDN'T HAVE . . . ?

The rain came last night, riding along with a strong and prolonged storm. Lots of loud thunder cracks and more than a couple that seemed to vibrate my head as well as my eardrums. At a couple minutes before ten, the power went out and did not come back on until after 1 am, by which time I had fallen asleep.

As far as I can tell this morning, part of a tree out front came down on the aerial warren of power lines at the intersection of Sargent Street and Riley. Last night, we could see that fire trucks had blocked off the 300 block of Riley - our block - and electric guys showed up with a cherry picker lift. A guy went up while it was still lightning to use a chainsaw; I am not certain I would do this.

A couple of circuits breakers tripped and not all the lights came back on, causing temporary panic among some denizens.

    NOT MUCH RAIN IN KENDALLVILLE

Drizzle, drizzle and no real constant soaking of the ground. Actually, no soaking at all.

    BIG FAT HAIR

I wish I had the type of hair that is thick and curls tightly so I could push my sunglasses up on my head and look cool. Oh, wait, I wear regular glasses with clip-ons . . . nevermind.

    FINDING THINGS IN KENDALLVILLE

I see there is going to be a Geo-caching event here starting the 20th and a lot of GPS operators will be looking for hidden sites. Much of this is going on - get ready for it Sydney - at the fairgrounds so you won't have much time to sniff all the smells the fair left behind. However, who knows what you will find with your nose once the geo-cachers have moved on. Patience, Sydney, patience.

Here's a thought: what about psychological cachers - you know people walking around trying to "find themselves." Maybe it could be a movie with Diane Keaton - hey, it was just an idea.

    GOODWILL HUNTING

Yes, I found this nifty gift for Hibernator and his bear friends while at the Goodwill; it is really neat - well, sort of neat . . . although I suppose some people wouldn't like it - and maybe some would think it is fake rustic. That's not my problem; my problem is that I am intending this for Christmas and Hibernator tells me he doesn't think I will be able to get it secret, i.e. keep my yap shut.

He admits that he is only good for about a week of secret-keeping; that admission only seems to say, "Come on, tell, you know you want to and you know I will understand because I can't keep a secret so just tell, tell, tell." Ack! I am being pulled into the trance - must break hypnotic spell before I blab.

I guess this secret stuff means I can't post a picture either. Rats.

MAYBE, JUST MAYBE . . . RAIN IN KENDALLVILLE

Could it be that we may actually get rain? Last year I would have said it was certainly probable. Now, we have been so dry with rain predicted many times that did NOT materialize, I am going to wait and see.

    AUUUGGGHHH . . . REDBOX STRIKES AGAIN

When we rented Mirror Wars, we rented another film, Jam, described as being about the individuals involved in a motor accident. The first indication that this movie was not going to be too good was when the preview at the beginning was for . . . wait for it . . . Mirror Wars. I spent most of my time watching the movie trying to figure out if the old man (who is probably around my age) was William Defoe* who played in Knot's Landing - not that I watched that tripe.

    * It was some other guy.

    MONDAY ONCE AGAIN

Starting out another week and this one is again beginning with a Monday - no wonder Monday has such an image problem. I don't know what the odds are in Las Vegas for a week beginning with a Wednesday, but I suppose they are fairly high. The annoyance of this particular Monday is mitigated with a Goodwill trip - a treasure hunt. Should I take a camera and photograph some of the great bargains? Why not?
    ACK! I forgot the camera.

    HAPPY IN OUR WORK

Okay, today Alison and I cleaned out the garage and packed the dumpster and repacked the trash which we had forgotten to take out last week . . . and we took out all the stuff behind the piano (Don't ask.) Summer painted part of the fence . . . woohoo.

We forgot to take pictures but Alison and I actually climbed up and into dumpster. Yuck! Yuck! Triple Super Duper Yuck!!!

    RUSSIAN MOVIE FROM REDBOX

Yesterday afternoon as we left Krogers/Scotts, we stopped by the REDBOX to see if there were any interesting movies and we got two. I haven't watched the first one we picked out yet because Alison found a movie titled Mirror Wars which advertised Rutger Hauer as a major character. As it turned out, his screen time was less than five minutes and I have no idea what his character was intended to be. He is pretty much "Mysterious Man."

The film was made in Russia and, after looking it up, I have discovered that it was financed (10 million) by the company that produced the "sabretooth" plane that was actually the real star of the film. Ah, oh, the "sexy" agent in the film was played by "the studio owner's/producer/writer/actor's wife" as noted in this review.

HERE'S a longer review from a guy at the University of Pittsburgh.

    NOBLE COUNTY FAIR - SATURDAY

Alison and Summer walked over to the fair this afternoon and came home saying it was a really dead place. None of the rides were going; the army had left the Merchant's Building . . . and to quote Alison, "It was sad." Summer added, "It looked like a desert."

    SCRABBLE VICTORY

Once again, the great and wonderful Jody defeated (crushed) the wimpy little Alison; the Summer was too afraid to play. Ha!!

    FRIDAY THE 13TH

Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh. I am somewhat concerned about my luck today.

    1) Robert has gone to Fort Wayne to see about his ankle still giving him a good deal of trouble after breaking it last August 15. He came home in a cast with a stress fracture.

    2) Looking for my camera. Didn't find it.

    3) I bought a $5 scale. I guess that would make it pretty cheap per pound.

BAYOU BILLY COMING TO APPLE FESTIVAL AGAIN

Last year I discovered Bayou Billy and his cherry wine. You bought it in a tin mug and refills were a dollar. I have my mug from last year, but I will probably wind up buying one with the 2007 date on it.

Oh, by they way, the Apple Festival is October 6-7.

RAIN IN KENDALLVILLE . . . or not?

Yo, there: We had rain in Kendallville! I don't know how much or anything else, but I heard it last night. (I have since come to think that perhaps I dreamed that it rained. Oh, well.)Yesterday was so hot and dry it seemed to suck the moisture right out of you; actually, it appeared it was doing that big time to the corn. Mother called from Scott that they were getting thunder about 9:30 last night, but it didn't materialize here and then the radar looked clear; I thought we weren't going to get anything at all.

Here's the lowdown from weather.com: It's 65˚ right now and the forecast is

    High
    76° F
    Precip:
    30%
A few showers early with bright sunshine by the afternoon. Cooler and less humid. High 76F. Winds NW at 10 to 20 mph. Chance of rain 30%.

    NOBLE COUNTY FAIR LINK

NOBLE COUNTY FAIR PICTURES FROM MONDAY.

COUSINS AT DEERE RUN IN SHIPSHEWANA

I remember going to Shipshewana with my aunt and grandmother to either put stuff in or take stuff out of the "locker." I was young enough to stand on "the hump" in the backseat and not have my head hit the roof. The locker was, I believe, rented freezer space. This would have been in the 50's.

When I went to IU and called home, I learned to automatically spell "Shipshewana" to help the operators find the area in Northern Indiana I was trying to reach.

Since those days, Shipshewana has developed into quite an Amish-themed tourist destination and , in fact, I am going to have lunch at the Blue Gate Restaurant today with my cousins who have come up from Fountain County.

The menu, which can be accessed by clicking the Blue Gate link above seems limited and different from what I remember. However, on another part of the site, there is this:
The Blue Gate's Amish and Mennonite homestyle cuisine features daily specials and entrees like succulent beef and thick homemade noodles, deep-dish chicken pot pie, and signature dish, homestyle meatloaf.

I have no idea why they wouldn't have this on the menu page itself and cannot believe they would not feature noodles and meatloaf. Maybe I will ask.

They are staying at the Deere Run Bed & Breakfast north of town off of Ind.5. I looked it up on the internet and the picture of the house greatly resembles the one we lived in in West Chester, Ohio. That one was in the everywhere-you-looked Cincinnati brick.
I don't know if Deer Run is in a subdivision or not, but I guess I will find out. I think it is, however, because the directions include the instruction "count 4 houses."

YIKES: It turns out that the people who own the Deere Run B&B have some school links to me. Glenda asked me about Judy Fuller from Sturgis High School and then mentioned the folks said the husband's brother was in my class and in band. She showed me the brochure where Nathan Frick's name was listed and remarked, "I can't remember what they said his brother's name was." I tentatively said, "Scott Frick?" Yes, that was it. They even saw my picture in an old yearbook - that's worth a double yikes.

I guess the breakfast was fantastic at Deere Run; while we were waiting for our meal to come at the Blue Gate, they described it to me and I'm thinking, "Whoa, how can you have room for anything more?" But then, we were there at 2 pm, so that helped.

UPDATE: I have no idea about the comment below-it popped up immediately from some guy in a different language. Can't understand it; think it was some sort of automatic response. I would have deleted it but that only removes the message, not the fact that one was left.

FLORAL HALL - NOBLE COUNTY FAIR, KENDALLVILLE

The green blob is a Parkview fan that was donated to the ladies in the sweltering building. The ceiling fans weren't cutting it and I would have sent out for some big ole industrial floor fans to get the air moving.

    Noble County Fair in Kendallville

Alison, Summer and I walked over to the fair this afternoon at about three when the temperature was about 90 ˚. We had a $1 soft serve from the 4-H; Summer and I had lemon and Alison, vanilla. They counted 10 rides in the infield and we saw no game booths. Yea. The guy with the long snake was not there, either.

Pizza Hut is NOT selling it's 32 oz. drinks in the easy-to-carry buckets with lids.

I thought it was more like an old-fashioned fair now that the rides are tucked away and don't start until 4pm. Our last stop was Floral Hall where it was sweltering; they needed a couple of big fans to get the air moving inside. Pictures of the displays, including the quilts will soon be posted in the galleries above.

    NORMAN ROCKWELL PUZZLE

Here's the Norman Rockwell cover Kathryn Feller and I are working as a puzzle.

    JIGSAW SESSION

Kathryn Feller and I worked for over two hours on a jigsaw puzzle at her house - a Saturday Evening Post cover by Norman Rockwell. Some of the pieces had weird shapes and a couple of border pieces eluded us forever. She's going to see Emory today; he is able to swallow now, but is getting tired of pureed foods.

    HIBERNATOR STARTING HOME

Yes, we are sad this morning; Hibernator is heading back to Georgia. It will be a long day of travel for him and we hope he has a safe trip. Last evening we had a pizza-making fest orchestrated by Hibernator (with kudos to Alison for getting things ready) and also a pizza-eating fest. Summer made two dog-shaped pizzas - pictures to follow - and Hibernator found Cameron's spiced-up pizza too tasty to resist. When Cameron came back into the kitchen, he exclaimed, "Who ate my pizza?" I don't know if Hibernator tried to look innocent or not, BUT he later confessed that he had chowed down over a third of it.

Just before we went to bed, Hibernator and I ate the feet and tail off Summer's second dog pizza. Ah, the truth shall make us free.

    Pictures to follow.

    kendallville INDIANA not INDIA

It's a good thing that Kendallville is not in India because women widowed there become outcasts, sent off to beg for their food, are expected to shave their heads, wear white. The heck with that.

Biswas speaks with a strong voice, but her spirit is broken. When her husband of 50 years died, she was instantly ostracized by all those she thought loved her, including her son.

"My son tells me: 'You have grown old. Now who is going to feed you? Go away,' " she says, her eyes filling with tears. "What do I do? My pain had no limit."

    SCRABBLE RESULTS

We started a Scrabble game this morning, Alison, Summer and I, but I had to leave for a dental appointment and Hibernator took over my place. When I came home, Alison was the victor, Summer was second and Hibernator, with whom I entrusted my letters, came in third.

The truth is that I was drawing yuckie letters, and luck was no better for the H-man. Multiple vowels and one-point letters. Sometime one-point letters and one vowel. Yuck. Oh, yeah, I already indicated my judgment on luck.

    LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD

It would seem how well the movie was received by those attending last night had something to do with age. Hibernator remarked that it asked the audience to really, really suspend belief and he apparently found that harder to do than the younger attendees who, I guess, just flung themselves into the movie action.

I forgot to ask what row they sat in. I'll get back to you on that.

GONE TO THE MOVIES - Kendallville Strand

Not me, but Hibernator, Robert, Cameron and Summer. They are supposedly as I type watching the new Bruce Willis movie . . . and I keep forgetting the title. Is it Live Free and Die Hard? Maybe. I will probably go later this week. Oh, I have a dentist appointment tomorrow, not that has anything to do with the movie, but for some reason it popped into my mind.

Ah, it is Live Free OR Die Hard.
