THREE HOUR DELAY
This morning I woke at 6am and came downstairs to read the newspaper. As the sky lightened and it grew close to the half hour, I stood up and out the window there was FOG - a lot of it. Yes, East Noble had a two hour fog delay and then, a little later, I heard Summer jumping up and down yelling "three hour delay!!!! three hour delay." Our groans weren't exactly at the same decibel level, but you could hear them.
She asked, "Do you think they will close?" Auuuggggghhhh!
SILENT HILL
Quentin was home this weekend and he and I and Cameron went to the movie at the Strand; Q was impressed with how the theater has been redone. A nice evening.

HERE IS A LITTLE PICTURE - OKAY TWO
We went to Fort Wayne and while there had lunch at Logan's. Here is a picture of their clock - set to, of course, DST - what we used to call "fast time."
Then I got a little artsy - and here is a shot of the light in the ladies room.
THE FIRST MOWING
Yes, I mowed the lawn; it is a little one so I do not need a rider - darn. There were more dandelions than I expected, given that I had practically drenched the grass in stuff that is supposed to kill those things last year. But, I guess they are tough little guys - some of them hugged the ground so that their heads didn't get chopped off. As the blade of the mower grew near, I wonder if they thought, "It was the best of times; it was the worst of times."

THE BIRTHDAY PERSON AT LUNCH AT PIZZA FORUM
THE CAKE
BIRTHDAY
Today is my older son's birthday. Two days ago was our Austrailan Shepherd Sydney's birthday. We didn't get a cake for Sydney - but we have one coming for Robert. Alison ordered it at Scott's and we are going to pick it up today when Summer gets home from school. I'll probably post a picture - assuming we don't drop it getting it in and out of the car.
For lunch we took him to Pizza Forum and I did indeed take pictures of the pizzas we ordered and of my glass of Pepsi, Diet Pepsi and Mountain Dew - not that you can tell it is a mixture, but the glass looked nice against the background of the red and white squared tablecloth.
Pizza Forum accepts cash or checks with proper ID. This is good to know in a day when we are so accustomed to whipping out the old debit card.
Oh, yeah, I have to get ground beef for the dog's special diet at the store. He has had a couple of bouts of pancreatitis so we have to be careful about what he eats. Our other dog, a cocker named Little Ann, has a cast iron stomach, but she is getting up in years and not exercising excess poundage off . . . so she's on the lean burger diet also.
Hmmmmm. Little Ann says I qualify for a lean diet too.
NICE INDIANA DAY
Sometimes it seems that nice weather days are pretty rare in Indiana. Ofter the day will dawn with sunshine and then clouds roll in by 11 am, dashing plans that have been made and maybe giving your mood a kick in the gut. Even if you are a lifelong Hoosier and have learned that the overcast can form quickly and therefore don't plan anything just becasue the day seemed so cheerful at 7 am, you can't help feel that physical letdown when things turn grey.
But, yesterday . . . yesterday was a very nice day. It was clear and sunny and not really hot. You would have to be a real curmudgeon not to be somewhat uplifted by the atmoshere outside. I may be a curmudgeon, but I guess I have not totally perfected the state, because I did feel good cheer out in the air, and the sun.
We took the opportunity to do just a few things - swept off the mini decks and got the leaves out of the plot where the ferns are coming up. I pulled some leaves out that had gathered throughout the winter in the line of rose bushes that are against a garage wall. And we sat at the table that is out there - an old patio one on an 8 by 8 homemade platform and soaked in the spring. We being my granddaughter and I.
We had an impromptu grilling as well - hamburgers and chicken breasts.
Today, Easter, the sky is going back and forth between blue and grey . . . we shall see, we shall see.
MOWING TIME
I have a very small yard here in Kendallville, but my mother has great a lot to mow up in LaGrange County and I go up and ride the mowers with her. Frankly, I think I would like to do it by myself some day when she is in town and just make any pattern I wanted. Actually, I like circles. You start out making your smallest turning radius and then make an ever growing circle. You are free to daydream and you don't have to worry about mowing the same spot twice - just keep going around.
I do this when Mother is there, but she often horns in on my circles, creating areas that challenge my no grass mown twice policy. To tell the truth, I don't think she likes the circle method - She likes to select sections and mown them, nibbling her way at getting done.
Sometimes I will be cruising along in a circle and I will look up and see her aiming straight at me, pointing me off to another section. Gosh, that is annoying.

A FAIR DAY IN SPRING
Now that it is getting warmer - at least for these past few days - it is hard not to think about what is coming up in summer. In July, of course, is the County Fair and one area I particuliarly enjoyed last year was the quilt display at Floral Hall. The old building with its doors flung open to the breeze, the wooden floors with the center area riser, the old-style railings - all make a great home to colors of the quilts. It is a place of comfort . . . even though, it's quilts not comforters . . . .hahahahaha
THE FAIR THIS YEAR IS SCHEDULED JULY 8-15.
AN EVENT FROM LAST YEAR
HERE'S A PICTURE FROM A COMMUNITIES THAT CARE workshop. That's Dan Barker in the blue shirt.
ONLINE PICTURES
The recent lack of posts is ironically because I have been online uploading digital pictures. I love digital cameras, but it is easy for the number of pictures to multiply like rabbits and eat up disk space. Of course, you can put them on CD's but then you have make certain you take care of the CD disks - and not lose them. I decided that I was going to find a server that would store my pictures, make them available for online viewing and print them professional. Ultimately, I went two ways; I enrolled in Ofoto (Kodak) plan and in the free service offered by Shutterfly. Kodak stores the photos in two physically different places and - with the plan - has an inexpensive printing cost. Shutterfly - which is what is being used for the photo galleries mentioned above - allows me to publish albums without requiring the viewer to sign in.
There are other servers out there but Ofoto and Shutterfly are the ones most often recommended by reviewers.

OH, HIBERNATOR - BREAK MY HEART
The pictures below come from, as stated, San Diego, courtesy of Hibernator. That is me, in the bottom picture. I think I am at the Fish Market Restaurant where I ate some dish - can't remember its names - and found myself chewing one bite . . . and chewing . . . and chewing . . . I mumbled something to Hibernator and he said, "Squid - sort of like chewing an eraser, isn't it? - an acquired taste." Not to be acquired by this cookie.
He also has pictures of me on a Russian submarine and the ship on which "Master and Commander" was filmed.

STEVE SPRUNGER: NEW EN SUPERINTENDENT
This is East Noble's new "guy in charge" - Steve Sprunger. He says he plans to be active in the community and visit the schools . . . so, all you students out there, are you asking yourself if he keeps a "naughty and nice" list?
SUN SUN SUN
This morning when I drove Alison to work, the sky seemed extremely black and I was thinking about the old saying that it is always darkest before the dawn. It was so black because the sky above was so clear. Yes, the sun is out. We have had an incredible number of grey skies this winter and it is so nice to see some blue and have light reflect off windows and cars. And, yes, I can see shadows of things. Hmmm, maybe it's time to get those Christmas lights off the bushes.
Sounds awful, doesn't it? . . . having lights up so long. Well, we put them on this big bushes by pulling down branches, wrapping a couple of loops of lights around them and they letting them fly into the sky to form lovely random patterns. But it is a trial to get them off, and we have started to use scissors in order to spare the branches being scraped by the wires. Guess, we'll finally get out there and take care of that.
But right now, I'm just happy to see sunlight.
GOODBYE NORTH SIDE
In the summer of 1995, I went down to North Side and register my grandson Cameron for first grade. He's a seventh grader now and, two years after he said goodbye to the elementary school where he spent five years of his young life, the community will be saying goodbye to the school forever. It will be demolished in June of this year and will only live on the memories of those who were students there, who taught there, who worked there, who dropped off kids and picked them up, who attended programs there and on and on.
THIS SATURDAY - APRIL 8 - IS A FAREWELL TO NORTH SIDE. The hours are 9 am-2pm.
Officially, the name of the event is NORTH SIDE ELEMENTARY SPRING BAZAAR & FAREWELL TOUR. Informally, it is FAREWELL, OLD FRIEND. The PTO is hosting the last Spring Bazaar and fifth-graders will be leading farewell tours.
Easy As Pie will be offering lunch; the PTO will be selling bricks and memory books: a silent auction is scheduled.
But, the event marks more of a transition than a passing. North Side will continue; only the old building will be torn down. As as for that word "demolished," I'm not so certain it has the correct connotation. The bricks will no longer be mortared together - but in the minds of the people of Kendallville, they will always remain in memory's eye, bonded together, making education available.
A BIG BLOW
We had a lot of wind today, from the west, I would say. Although April 3rd, the sky was grey all day - up until now. Now is is mostly grey, but some sunlight is shining through. I have been working on my homepage at mac. com and have linked to it on the sidebar. I think it will be a great place to place some photo albums. It's called
The Peanut Butter Cafe & Roadhouse.
CELEBRATE TODAY
At one point, I couldn't start the day without checking out what it was celebrating. Take a look at
Yahoo Greetings and see what kind of party hat you need for today.
TORNADOES
Storms moved through Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee and other states yesterday. According to news reports the line started in Northeast Arkansas. I lived in that part of that state for about a year in the early 70's and learned a way tornadoes are different in the South. A lot of time, they will come at night - the weather conditions are more favorable then. In Indiana, I am most aware of tornado watches starting in daylight and ending around midnight. In other words, if there were a threat, we usually knew about it during the day and, if we felt it necessary, we could stay up until the watch was over.
The first year in Arkansas, I read about people going to bed on just a regular night and the first hint they had of a tornado was when a siren blew or the roof blew off. That got you thinking.
WELL, ICE AGE 2 IS HOT
Ice Age 2 came to Kendallville the day it opened nationwide - and it looks as if it is doing pretty well. Click

IMMIGRATION
There are a lot of stories about immigration;
THIS is just one of them.
One fact strikes me as most strange, and, perhaps, most telling. A awful lot of these protesters - who by the way are being allowed to express themselves in public, thanks to the Constitution of the United States - are waving the flags of the countries from which they came.
One protester voiced his unhappiness with the US in SPANISH.
I thought people came to this country to be Americans - and if I remember my high school government class, being an American involved not just rights but responsibilities - respecting the law being one of them.
EARLY TO BED TONIGHT
Dear Mitch,
I will be going to bed early tonight because I will have to be on my way to take my daughter-in-law to work at 5:15 am. You will say it is 6:15 am, but then you are doing the Daylight Saving Time thing. And you will probably still be in bed. I pledge my watch to Traditional Indiana Time, although since the acronym for that is TIT, I guess I will have to rechristen it.
Blast you, Mitch. I voted for you and you let me down. Get a map and a tape measure and see how far we are from the Atlantic Ocean. Now measure the distance to Chicago. Gasp. What a surprise. We are midwesterners, Mitch. This is Indiana, Mitch. Though, hey, maybe we should change our name too in order to be more "in tune" with the New Yorkies.
Yes, Mitch, I will give this new state name thing some thought.
Sincerely,
Jody
