WESTVIEW STARTING SCHOOL - ON THE 16th?

I talked about Georgia starting school early, and now I hear a rumor, and I will call it a rumor, because it seems ridiculous, that Westview is starting school on August 16th.

I do not know why, but I suspect it has something to do with the achievement tests given in the fall, which is not a ridiculous reason, given the demand to see good statistical results. However, I think putting pressure on the schools to show improvement overlooks the crucial area of parental responsibility. Seeing that homework obligations are met and checking with teachers to ask, "Is my kid 'getting it?'" is part of parenting. And if that kid is not keeping up, then why not? Is it the kid's attitude and study habits and lack of appreciation for education . . . or is the teacher "just not doing the job" that is the primary cause.

I think it is the former; I believe students and parents need to be accountable for the way they approaching the education system, not to mention the way they are using tax dollars aimed at education.

More school time is not the long term answer; the acceptance of responsibility by parents and students is.

The issue may be coming to a head as some states pass laws putting the start of school at the end of August. Texas has just passed legislation that will not permit schools to start until the fourth Monday in August, starting in 2007:

Districts sigh, but some parents happy with late August rule for '07

06:49 AM CDT on Friday, May 19, 2006

By COLLEEN McCAIN NELSON / The Dallas Morning News

August will soon be a summer month again.

While the spotlight was trained on school finance and property taxes during the Legislature's special session, lawmakers quietly slid the school start date back to the fourth Monday in August, starting next year. They also took away any chance for districts to get waivers that had allowed the start of school to creep ever closer to Aug. 1.

In 2007, school will start Aug. 27 – no exceptions.

And if the Westview kids were to move across the State line into Michigan, they wouldn't be starting until after Labor Day. Check out THIS ARTICLE in the Michigan Education Report. The article begins:

Public schools in Michigan will start after Labor Day beginning in 2006, now that Gov. Jennifer Granholm has signed House Bill 4803 into law. The law stipulates that all public schools, including charter schools, must wait until after the Labor Day holiday to start school, beginning with the 2006-07 school year.

Perhaps, we need to pass laws requiring parents to attend school to relearn how important education is.

    WELL, NO STORM, NO RAIN

The breeze picked up a little for awhile but the massive storm that seemed on radar to be eating Michigan skirted north of us. My mother, who lives near the Toll Road in LaGrange County told me that sky to the north looked ugly and threatening. She said that the temperature did go down, however. I looked at the weather website and gee, the temperature where she is is only "84˚, feels like 90˚"

    Yeah, Mother, that's cool.

    THUNDERSTORM WATCH

I don't remember this being predicted, but it looks as if bad storms could pass close to or just north of Kendallville. You can click on the WEATHER link on the right side of the page for up-to-date information and any warnings. We are now under a watch.

MY MOTHER IS TALKING ABOUT ETHANOL

My mother will be 80 come October and she was talking this morning about ethanol, the fuel that can be produced with corn. Aha, you see, Mother reads the newspapers, watches the news and frequently has an Internet search for me to do; she knows that the oil companies made big profits and that she is paying $3 for gas.

She also knows that we are too dependent on the Middle East for oil. So Senator Lugar, breathe a thankful sigh, you've got Sarah "Toots" Grismore on your side. Now, as for Governor Daniels, he is still "that boy" since he put us on EASTERN Daylight Savings Time. She calls it GD Time - the GD standing for Governor Daniels sometimes . . . and sometimes G** D***.

You can read The Kendallville Mall article on ethanol and biodiesel HERE which is at PICTURES ON THE MANTLE in the sidebar list.

The picture of the "corn pump" is from The Danish Center for Biofuel.

THE MOVING WALL AT ROME CITY

If you read my article in this month's Mall, you know that The Moving Wall Vietnam Veteran's Memorial is going to be at Kelly Park during Chautauqua Days. The Sylvan Lake Association is funding the visit, American Legion Post 381 will be organizing the labor to put it up and Richard Manlove of rural Wolcottville was instrumental in getting Rome City on The Moving Wall's schedule.

Here is a picture of what it looked like when set up and landscaped at small town in New York.

    I WIMPED

I did not go to Main Street to see the old cars and take part in the festivities because I wanted to take pictures of the car and it was soooooo hot when the sun was up and tooooooo dark at night to get good pictures . . . that I wimped. Okay, yes, I could have gone anyway. I was alone . . . Well, that's never stopped me from going shopping.
I wasn't in shape . . . Well, I could have been there for a little while, getting at least a little exercise walking up and down the street.

I believe I need a better rationalization as to why I didn't go and have a good time . . . I didn't have a poodle skirt and the theme was the fifties? My saddle shoes were too small?

I guess it comes down to I didn't make the effort and I missed out.

    WHAT IS GREM USA?

I believe I saw an article in a Fort Wayne paper about a new company was going to make guitars. I starting thinking about it and did a little research and found this:

Some things never change. Take, for example Grem USA (OTCBB: GRMU), the latest incarnation of a struggling public company that, in the past five years has been known as Premier Axium ASP, Core Solutions, Sunshine Ventures, Christine's Precious Petals and Global Business Markets. By any name, and in the pursuit of a succession of disparate ventures, the Company has been singularly unsuccessful. Ambitious plans to develop an outsourcing business, "smoothies" bars, real estate operations and some sort of floral venture, all failed miserably – except, of course, for the impact that overblown promises, vague press releases and promotional hype may have had on the volume and price of the Company's shares. SOURCE

Hmmmmm . . . that's quite a range of names; I think "Sunshine Ventures" is the hokiest and my mind wants to turn GREM inot GERM.

    CELEBRATE MAIN STREET- FRIDAY

An album of pictures - July 28 - is in the photo galleries above.

The mosquito fogger was going, The Wreck was there to show the movie "Eight Below" and you know what? . . . GD Time (Governor Daniel's Time) aka Daylight Savings Time pushed the start time of 8:30 pm last year to 9:30 pm this year, which might have been a little late for some families.

However, there were people putting out their stuff at 8:30 and listening to amateur singers perform American Idol style. A couple danced while one gentleman sang.
Main Street at about 8 pm on Friday July 28th.
Folks starting to gather for the showing of "Eight Below" behind the Chamber of Commerce.
    The Bear came.

    BIRD FLU UPDATE

I've been talking about the possibility of a bird flu epidemic and the work going into county response team for a few months now, including an article in the Kendallville Mall outlining information provided by Michael Newton, the County Coordinator. Now there is some good news out of Britain about a vaccine: LONDON, England (CNN) -- A British company announced this week that it has developed the first effective small-dose bird flu vaccine.

    VEGAN DIET FOR DIABETES 2

A Reuters story on the CNN news page has this headline: Vegan diet reverses diabetes symptoms, study finds and this first paragraph: People who ate a low-fat vegan diet, cutting out all meat and dairy, lowered their blood sugar more and lost more weight than people on a standard American Diabetes Association diet, researchers said this week.

Well, according to Wikipedia, the vegan diet which excluded animal products is now observed by about 0.2% of the adult U.S. population. That does not bode well for probability that this diet will be adopted voluntarily.

    NO MEAT
    NO FISH
    NO DAIRY PRODUCTS.

However, if it works as well as they say studies have shown, it may become the prescribed diet for diabetics . . . Well, the good thing is Peanut Butter is on it and whole wheat bread. I once said I could live on peanut butter . . . and someday I may be eating my words.

    CELEBATE MAIN STREET WEATHER

Look RIGHT HERE to see a series of suns that indicate a good week-end for the movie tonight and Cruise Night tomorrow.

After the downpours yesterday and last night, I was a little worried . . .

Of course, you might notice that it is supposed to become very hot during the coming week.

    SCHOOL HAS STARTED IN GEORGIA

Yes, school is in session in many parts of Georgia already and the entire state will back by the next week. (Public schools) Atlanta schools started on JULY 22. Yes, this seems Un-American. Think Georgia; think August; think HOT.

My husband put me on to this information this week when he was in Georgia on business. I did not think, "Whoa! Has this man had a stroke?" but it was so hard to believe and I looked it up on the Internet, and yes, they start school in late July to very early August.

Obviously, there is quite a controversy over this and a bill was before the state legislature last year to push back the start day of school, but it failed. One of the reasons given is that the teachers want the kids back in school before the standardized tests are taken in the fall to give them time to get the kids up to speed and raise the schools' performance. The state's educational site is HERE and the quote from the State Superintendent is interesting: "We will lead the nation in improving student achievement." It seems that any statistics based on a policy of making your students study for a month more before the test that most states require would show skewed results.

At any rate, as I type, students in Atlanta are riding to school on air-conditioned busses.

And I thought late August was an early start date.

    MOSQUITOES

I have noticed after all the rain and greenhouse humidity outside that a lot of mosquitoes have shown up. I saw the fogger go by on Riley Street a couple of days ago but still had to fight a couple of the insects this morning. At my mother's in LaGrange County, they are as thick as they were back in the summer of 1986, when my dad had to brush off the dog before bringing her into the house after walks. I remember standing on the deck and counting mosquitoes in the double digits on my legs. It was yucky and I hope to hear the fogger again.

Mark Twain said this about them:

    MOSQUITOES
He said that two of them could whip a dog, and that four of them could hold a man down; and except help come, they would kill him--"butcher him," as he expressed it. Referred in a sort of casual way--and yet significant way-- to "the fact that the life policy in its simplest form is unknown in Lake Providence--they take out a mosquito policy besides." He told many remarkable things about those lawless insects. Among others, said he had seen them try to vote. Noticing that this statement seemed to be a good deal of a strain on us, he modified it a little: said he might have been mistaken, as to that particular, but knew he had seen them around the polls "canvassing."
    - Life on the Mississippi

The quote is from this site.

    CELEBRATE MAIN STREET

In tomorrow's Kendallville Mall, you will be ablt to read about the activites planned for Friday and Saturday on Main Street. It will be in your mailbox.

LITTLE GREEN CAR - GETTING BETTER

John B. from Vorderman's called today and they think they have the problem figured out with the LGC and the sporadic failure of the #5 glow plug. It is a build-up of carbon in the older engine. We're going to a fast glow plug system and LGC should be home tomorrow night.

In the meantime, my granddaughter has fallen in love with the loaner Jetta that I have. It has a lot of nice things, such as a moonroof/sunroof. We thought she might want to sleep in the Jetta last night.

Hmmmmm . . . Maybe she should not walk in front of "Little Greenie" when he comes home.

    REMEMBER JOHN BISIO?

John Bisio who was prominent in Wal-Mart's locating a super-store east of Kendallville is now making the news in a much larger town, er, excuse me, city: Chicago. CNN's Website has an article about Wal-Mart and the city. It is important to remember that what most people think of as "Chicago" is actually the city itself and its suburbs. This Wal-Mart controversy involves the city.

    A NICE JETTA FROM VORDERMAN'S

While the LGC is in for tests, I have a grayish silver Jetta loaner and it is nice. In fact, I took it up to my mother and she liked it - although she thinks she wants a different color.

    EMORY FELLER - 93rd BIRTHDAY

Ah, yes, a tradition has been maintained - I forgot my neighbors birthday. It was July 21 and I missed it. Missed it big time. I went out in the front yard yesterday and looked over at Emory's house and my mind screamed, "You forgot his birthday again!" Rats! Well, I will try to find a belated birthday card and take it over.

INDIANA WEATHER HAS BEEN BUGGING ME

INDIANA WEATHER HAS BEEN BUGGING ME for most of my life. You get up in the morning and the sky is a brilliant cheerful blue and you make plans - unless you are a native of the area and then you should know better . . . but it so tempting in the sunshine to plan something. The morning wears on a little and ,oh dear, is that a cloud in the sky? They can multiply like bunnies and the next the you now, the weather is gloomy.

Waking up to clouds isn't nearly as bad as waking up to a spirit raising sunny day and then having it slip away. Look at what it says for today: Mostly sunny early with isolated thunderstorms developing this afternoon. High 84F. Winds SW at 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 30%. Rats.

    OH, YES, THE DELETE BUTTON

It has been hot and I have been writing. This is what happens when summer is upon you:

I do not, as a rule, read aloud to myself anything that I have written, which I am certain is probably a way I have spared myself a good deal of anguish and embarrassment. But, today, because perhaps summer slows things, I did just that and found that the voice of my writing had drifted into the slow drawl of the Waltons saying goodnight on the mountain.

Deciding I did not wish to rewrite anything, or indeed, that I had anything in me to rewrite, I am simply alerting you that this article, which you will now formally begin, is apparently a product of those lazy, hazy days of summer.
    Ahem . . .

And you can read this article on Friday, July 28th, in the Kendallville Mall.

    LITTLE GREEN CAR UPDATE - 1976 300D

Okay, we cannot figure out what is wrong with the Little Green Car and I will be adding a link to its daily status soon.

Here are the basic facts . . . about this basic diesel engine car:

    Year:1976
    Make: Mercedes-Benz
    Model: 300D
    5 cylinder engine

The car purrs when it runs, but the number 5 glow plug in the number 1 ignition series has failed at least twice and no one has been able to find a reason for it to be shorting out.

I will be keeping a log as to starts, trips, weather, etc.

    Any suggestions are appreciated.

SHRINERS HOSPITALS - WILLIAM A VANCE

    Shriners Hospitals for Children

Shriners Hospitals for Children is a network of 22 pediatric hospitals in the U.S., Canada and Mexico that provide specialized care for orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries and cleft lip and palate. All services are provided at no charge.

Eligibility for care is not based on financial need or relationship to a Shriner.

I have been writing short notices about my father-in-law's death and an article in a magazine reminded me of something in which he was very interested and for which he donated much of his time - The Shriner's Hospitals.

William A Vance was one of the guys in outfits and on motorcycles in many parades. Sometimes the cycles were very little; sometimes they were big. Once, early in his chapter's history, he wore a red Indian suit with a chief's feather headdress.

When I was in Cincinnati, writing for a paper there, I did an article about a big fundraiser for the Burn Center that was in the city. I called him for a little first person information. He gave me a lot of facts and stories and then called me back to make certain that I had gotten it down correctly - that I understood the importance of it.

After I had written the article, the editor pulled out one paragraph, to highlight in bolder print. It had to do with the fact that individual Shrine Chapters are responsible for paying the bills for individual patients. You see, at 2 am, a call may come to an officer of a local Shrine Chapter and the question being asked is this: "Will you accept pledge your financial support to this person's care until he is 18?" And that man, awakened in the middle of the night, will usually say, "Yes."

I don't like it when people make disparaging remarks about grown men riding around in little cars and on little cycles - laughing at them actually. Those men have done this and are continuing to do it to help ease suffering and pain, to make recovery an option.

    WORD FROM VORDERMAN'S

John called from Vorderman's to tell me that we may have some good news about the little green car. A gentleman in Indianapolis believes he has seen a case or the "failing #5 glow plug" and is sending up some information. Let us all think positive thoughts.

    MARTHA STEWART. EX-CON, CHRISTENS SHIP

Excuse me, but I don't understand why Martha Stewart was asked to christen a cruise ship. This bit of information came my way when I read this article about the ship rolling over on its side on the fourth voyage.

REMEMBRANCE OF WILLIAM A VANCE - by Wayne Botkin

As I have written, my father-in-law, William A. Vance, passed away last Tuesday and was laid to rest following a Masonic Funeral at Harmony Cemetery on Saturday. What follows is an emailed memory of him from his high school days:

    This by cousin Wayne Botkin:

My best recollection of Bill Vance was in 1941;we we were at
    Carthage High;Bill was a sophomore and I, a senior & on the
varsity football--Bill played guard and I, tackle. Bill
being two years younger and smaller played only parttime.
When Bill was in the game he played long side of me. When
a running play was over our side, I would say "Come on Bill."
We opened holes many times for the running back to make a
good gain. Oftentimes when we were unscrambling from a
pile-up, Bill's helmut (being too large) would be half
turned on his head and I could only see a big smile on his
face. Yes, Bill was "tough and scrappy" which he had to use
too many times during his life.
Yes, I am proud to have been his cousin. May his soul rest in
    peace.

    ANOTHER KENDALLVILLE WEATHER HEADS UP

I looked at the map and it appears that storms are moving through the middle of Michigan and there is some activity to the southwest of Chicago. However, I think I will be able to fall asleep without hearing thunder . . . and it almost never wakes me up. (My mother's cat goes to the basement, though.

WOE IS ME, THE LITTLE GREEN CAR IS AT VORDERMAN'S

Yes, the little green car, which is so recognizable it would be impossible for me to use it as a get away car, is, alas, in the garage for suspected glow plug problems. It had been just purrring, absolutely purring . . . and then I mentioned to someone that I didn't want to jinx it, but "Boy, the car is just purring."

I have been driving it all around, checking eBay for little things such as a a replacement headlight/turn signal cover and now it it sick. You know, it needs a new headlight thingie because two Thanksgivings ago I sort of accidentally on a really rainy, steamy window type of day drove it into a pole at Wal-Mart.

MASONIC FUNERAL SERVICE - WILLIAM A VANCE Jr

William Vance. Age: about 20. Era: WWII. Job: tail gunner.

My father-in-law, William A. Vance Jr. will have a Masonic Funeral Service tomorrow morning. Reading this paragraph from his obituary in The Daily Gate City, you can see why it is fitting:

He was a 50-year member of Denver Lodge 464, Denver, Ill., Gate City Chapter 7, Royal Arch Masons, Damancers Commandery 5 Knights Templain, Apolla Council of Keokuk, Valley of Quincy Consistory, KAABA Shrine of Davenport, Order of Eastern Star and served as district deputy grand master of the Seventh Western District of the State of Illinois in 1982 and 1983. He was awarded the York Rite Cross of Honor in 1953. He also was a member of the Past Masters and Past Commanders of the York Rite, State of Iowa. Recently, he received an award for 50 years of loyal service from the Quincy Consistory. He served as captain of the Keokuk Chief Patrol for the Keokuk Shriners. He received the E.L. Lawrence Award for an Outstanding Mason in 2000.

Masonic funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Lamporte Funeral Home, Carthage, with the Denver Masonic Lodge officiating.

Following is the conclusion of the service cited above:

There is no death. What seems so is transition. All that is beautiful and good and true in human life is no more affected by the shadow of death than by the darkness that divides today from tomorrow.

Our paths lead not to the grave but through it. Immortal we are and ever shall be. We look not to another life, but to the perfecting of this one. In God's good time we shall be raised by His right hand to that higher, fairer phase of life for which this is only the preparation.

Friendship is refreshment and sweetness as we pass this way. It is much to feel that, wherever we are, we have friends, and that their friends are ours as well. Our Brother's friends are lonely in this hour, but the friendship we felt for him extends to them. We, too, loved him.

We, too, feel the pain of parting. Our sympathy, our love, are theirs as they were his. Our entire fraternity surrounds his loved ones with the assurance of its affection. We offer the support of our sympathy, the comfort of our faith, the inspiration of our hope, that they, with us, may look beyond this hour through the opening portals of the infinite. So then, let us be unceasingly grateful for every God-given virtue which the life of our Brother expressed, and let us be comforted and sustained by the assurance that life goes on unbroken and uncorrupted and that God alone is the life and light of men.

A SOGGY TIME AT THE FAIR

After two really hard rains, all this was flooded. We drove by after it had been pumped out at 8:30 pm.

And here is old North Side being torn down.

FLOODING IN RIDE AREA - NOBLE COUNTY FAIR

We had a lot of rain today - two torrential downpours - and the southwest corner of the fairgrounds where the "big kid" rides are located incurred flooding. As of 6:30 pm, water was being pumped from the low lying area onto Wayne Street.

JESSIE WISLER HUFF SHIMP'S SEWING BASKET

This is not my grandmother's sewing basket, but it is almost exactly like the one she had for most of her life. Mother says she remembers having something that would need mending and Grandma saying, "Well, bring me my basket."

I have the basket now, and I have used it, to keep embroidery thread in and little scissors and the like.

I don't know how old these baskets are, but Grandma was born in December, 1881.

JULY 13 AT NOBLE COUNTY FAIR - PART II

Oh yeah, I'm bushed, tired, worn-out . . . and my feet hurt. Here are a few pictures from our trip back to the fairgrounds.

Ready for the Scrambler . . . again.

Hmmm . . . is that Summer calling "Arrrrrrggggghhh" on the pirate ship?

A LOT OF RAIN IN LAGRANGE COUNTY, IN

Whoa!! When I called my mother yesterday to say we'd be heading out to the Pirates of the Caribbean, she mentioned that supposedly nine inches of rain had been reported in the county where she lives (near Shipshewana). Well, I guess so. It is in the headlines of CNN's internet news today.

Pam Soule, LaGrange County's emergency management director is quoted. Homes were flooded in Topeka and firefighters sandbagged to protect others.

    PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 2

I saw the movie tonight and while I was entertained during the two hours and some 30 minutes, I don't think it was as good as it could have been . . . and I got tired of all the slimy (literally) characters and the big squid's tentacles. Also, I thought the director relied on the viewers having seen Depp's character in the first movie and merely provided some visual cues to refresh your memory.

Okay, the big stick with the fruit was not bad . . .

    A SON'S TRIBUTE

My husband, Ronald Vance, has written an eloquent tribute to his father, William A. Vance Jr., who passed away yesterday. Please read "Poppa Bear is Gone*" at The West Facing Cave.

    WILLIAM A VANCE Jr. 1926-2006

My father-in-law passed away this morning at his home on the Illinois banks of the Mississippi River, not far from where he was born 80 years ago on a farm close to Carthage, Illinois, the son of Lydia and William A. Vance Sr.

He always did his very best. He gave it his all. He got the job done. In the words of his eldest son, Ronald Vance, "I don't think I know anyone who worked harder than Dad."
